AAPA Leadership Fellows Program

Call for Applications

To facilitate the development of AAPA leaders who will contribute to advancing Asian Americans, multiculturalism, and social justice within psychology, AAPA is initiating a new leadership development program.

Fellows selected for the program will participate in several trainings, receive individual and group mentoring from experienced leaders in AAPA, observe/participate in AAPA Executive Committee sessions, complete a year-long Fellows’ project, and present their experiences at the 2009 AAPA conference.  Fellows from the 2008-2009 cohort will then become Past Fellows and will mentor incoming fellows for the 2009-2010 year (optional attendance at midyear and 2010 August meetings).

Fellows will receive a stipend ($500-$1000, final amount TBD based on funding) in the first year and $250 travel stipends for each required meeting (Boston, New Orleans, Toronto).  Additional costs of travel will be at fellows’ expense.

Areas for Fellows’ Projects
Each Fellow (individually or in pairs) will assume primary responsibility for a Fellow’s Project associated with an AAPA initiative.  The specific goals and outcomes for each project will be developed by each fellow in collaboration with their mentor and the AAPA Executive Committee.  Project Areas for 2008 Fellows include:
  1. Social Justice and Advocacy:  Fellows will collaborate with the current AAPA Task Force for Social Justice to develop an initiative contributing to social justice and advocacy by and for Asian Americans.
  2. Training of Psychologists: Fellows will contribute to developing a forum/program for ethnic minority psychology students from multiple racial and ethnic groups to discuss their experiences and contribute to shaping psychological education/training in relation to race, culture, and social justice
  3. Addressing Multiple Oppressions and Intersecting Identities: Fellows will develop an initiative to address some aspect of addressing multiple oppressions and intersecting identities within psychology.  For 2008, our focus is on the intersections of race, culture, and religious oppression.
  4. Policies and Procedures: Fellows will contribute to the development of the AAPA Policies and Procedures manual, developing familiarity with policies and procedures, experience in writing policy, and identifying areas for growth and development.

Applicants must be AAPA members who have completed their doctoral degree by June 30, 2008.  Preference will be given to applicants who have some prior leadership experience in local contexts (e.g. within their graduate program) but who have not had leadership experience at the national level within psychology (e.g. held formal leadership positions in APA or other national psychological associations or served in any capacity on the AAPA Executive Committee).

Applications should include (a) the required cover sheet (see below), (b) the applicant’s CV (no more than 3 pages, please include a section detailing prior leadership experience and the names of 2 professional references), (c) a short statement (no more than 1000  words) describing the reasons for applying and the desired outcome for the applicant, (d) an indication of project choice (see above) and a short description for why that project is interesting to the applicant, and (e) one letter of reference from an individual familiar with your professional work and past leadership experiences.  Please send applications by June 1 to Karen Suyemoto, AAPA Vice President, karen.suyemoto@umb.edu
